Dr. Whiteside is a graduate of Auburn University with a degree in pre-medicine. His post-graduate education includes a master's degree in physiology from the University of Wisconsin and a medical degree in 1953 from the University of Alabama Medical School in Birmingham.

Dr. Whiteside also performed a fellowship in pediatric oncology at Sloan Kettering Cornell Medical Center in New York City.
